She woke up three hours later. She must have cried herself to sleep she thought. Winston’s warm breathing against her tummy was both calming and comforting. She sat up and stretched, her whole body hurt. She rubbed her eyes and pulled herself up, the sunshine suddenly didn’t seem as friendly as it did this morning. It had turned into a cold, bright sunshine that seemed to burn itself into her apartment. She shut all the blinds and closed the curtains. Wrapping herself in a blanket, she dialed Charlotte’s number.
“Heeeeeey Darlin’!”
“Sophie died.”
“Oh, hunni. I’m coming.”
Charlotte showed up at the door with chinese food, a box of extra soft tissues, and even a treat for Winston.
“Oh you look terrible!!” Charlotte’s brows furrowed and her bottom lip trembled. She threw her delicate arms around her. The two sat wrapped up in blankets, eating chinese food and watching My Fair Lady. Elena had decided not to break the news about England yet as she wanted to some more time to think about it herself. Charlotte decided to sleep over and the two passed out on the couch after a long, emotional day.
Charlotte left early the next morning to meet Hunter for their usual Sunday brunch and Elena sat down to contemplate decisions that could change her life. She picked up a few of the documents Margaret left on the table which included pictures of the house and property in Dorset. It was a beautiful house in her opinion, a small rustic manor home with a little picket fence and a dirt path. It was clearly in need of renovations and a good paint job but the potential seemed endless. The property was beautiful, rolling green hills and fields, and some fenced in areas that seemed to be designated for animals. This was the opposite of what Elena had initially wanted out of life. There was nothing modern about this house, and even though it may have servants quarters, she certainly couldn’t picture an aluminum kitchen with granite counters or a marble bathroom. But somehow, Elena felt excitement and joy when she looked at the photos and found herself imagining what she would to fix up the place and what colors she would paint the shutters.
She looked at Winston, “What do you think about moving to England?” Winston groaned, rolled onto his back and wagged his tail. Elena smiled and tickled his tummy. “Is that a yes?” she laughed and blew raspberries on his pink belly to which he responded by making half grunting, half wheezing noises and wagging his tail even more furiously while licking her face. The sunshine seemed to be a bit brighter today than it was yesterday and although she still felt overwhelmed with sorrow, a new feeling of excitement and opportunity began to creep in. Yesterday, she was too crippled with sadness to consider anything but today she thought she could make a list of pros and cons about moving half way across the world.
Before beginning her list, she decided to put it out of her mind and do something fun for a few hours. She grabbed Winston and headed to the dog park that was only a few blocks from her house.
She returned a few hours later and began making her list. It started with the cons: leaving New York, quitting her job, leaving her apartment, the hassle of moving, and leaving Charlotte. Her pros were: leaving New York, quitting her job, leaving her apartment and getting to start a new life. I guess the only real con is leaving Charlotte she thought who could always come and visit. She found herself justifying the move. She then repeated the same phone call to Charlotte as yesterday.
“Hello Hunni! How are you doing??” Charlottes voice was earnest.
“I’m moving to England.”
*Silence* “Im coming.”
Within twenty-five minutes Charlotte was standing at her door sans the movie, food and doggie treat. “I’m sorry, you’re what!” she demanded.
“Come in Charlotte and I will explain it to you.”
The two of them sat down on the couch as they did the night before and Elena began telling her the rest of the Sophie story and showed her all the paperwork and photos.
“You aren’t seriously considering this are you Elena? I mean, you hate the country! That’s why you’re living here, to get away from it! And you’ve never been to England? How do you know you’ll like it? What is there to DO there anyway! How will I see you!” The questions poured from Charlotte’s mouth like a river.
“Well I haven’t made up my mind quite yet but I think it might be an amazing opportunity for me. I mean, its in a different country with a new job and a new house and new people.” she saw the hurt in Charlotte’s eyes. “Oh Charlotte! It’s not personal! I would want you to come and visit me loads!! If I did go.”
Charlotte hugged Elena tightly and told her that she thought it really was an amazing opportunity and said, “I am just being selfish Ellie, I want you here for myself but I think that deep down you would be much happier in a place like this” as she pointed to one of the pictures, “than here in this place.”
Elena was shocked, “Really? Do you really think that after all these years I would like to go back to that country life after all?”
Charlotte smiled and nodded. “Can we put on a movie now and think about all this life- changin‘ nonsense later!”
Elena laughed and pulled her cd case out of the drawer to look for the perfect movie for the two of them. She pulled out Gone with the Wind and stuck it in the dvd drive. The two of them cuddled up on the couch and Charlotte even picked up Winston and set him down between the two of them. They all watched the movie together and Elena started to feel the deep sorrow diminish ever so slightly.
6:30 am. Elena laid in bed wide awake. This was her day. She giggled and thought of the cliche that fit her life perfectly: today is the first day of the rest of her life. She had decided. She was moving to England. She slipped out of bed and put the kettle on for tea. She felt oddly refreshed and it took her a few minutes to realize that neither her clothes were damp nor did she feel groggy….no nightmares!! She couldn’t remember the last night she had that was nightmare free. She felt positively giddy. She danced around her apartment and laughed to such a degree that Winston actually emerged from under the covers in investigate.
“Oh Winston!!” she grabbed him and danced with him around the living room, “we’re going to have such an adventure together!”Winston wheezed and licked her face, presumably agreeing with whatever she was saying.
After breakfast, Elena composed herself and gave Winston a kiss and a wink and walked out the door. She arrived at work but this time neither the elevator nor the black hoard, nor Sebastian could put a damper on her attitude. “Good Morning Sebastian!” she said enthusiastically as she strode past him on the way to her office. He looked completely bewildered, so much so that he did not even respond. When Elena had reached her desk, she promptly threw her bad on the floor and spun around in her office chair. Sebastian tentatively knocked on her door before entering.
“Is everything ok Elena?” he asked.
“Everything is great! I’m resigning and moving to England!” she beamed.
Sebastian looked totally and completely dumbfounded. “Um, ok, I’ll come back later.” Elena laughed and began to draw up her letter of resignation. Within fifteen minutes, she had written the letter and delivered it to Kate. She now started on her asinine articles that suddenly seemed very doable and very interesting. Yes, Elena wanted to know everything there was to know about hair dye and fake nails. Bring on the beauty articles she thought, nothing seemed to be able to drain her today.
At precisely five thirty Elena got up from her chair, grabbed the box of items, which she had spent ten minutes on her lunch packing, dropped off her resignation letter (effective immediately) and walked calmly out of the building, beaming. As soon as she arrived home and greeted Winston, she plopped her half empty box on the counter, herself down on the couch and breathed the deepest sigh. Free she thought. It was the first time she had felt light and free since she was a small child. Then the fear started to seep in, questions began to bombard her; what was she thinking, what was she going to do for money, how was she going to pack up her apartment, what would she do in England. She decided that she was not going to think about that tonight, she’d think about that tomorrow. Elena was not quite sure what to do with this new found freedom, one part of her felt that she could not go through with her nightly routine, as if she had rebelled so drastically today that it would only be right to continue on down that path. She peaked outside her window, rain and darkness. On second thought, maybe I will just have a quiet night in but maybe I will order in pizza from a place I’ve never tried and drink a cup of coffee! She decided that that would just have to be enough rebellion for tonight. She flipped through the phonebook, looking for a pizza place and Winston, who seemed to notice the change, paced nervously back and forth in front of the TV. After Elena had changed and shoved all her work stuff into a corner, scooped up Winston, grabbed her umbrella and headed out into the rain. Twenty five minutes later a wet Elena and Winston returned with an equally wet ham and pineapple pizza accompanied by a soggy cupped latte. After changing into her pajamas she grabbed a slice of pizza and plopped herself down on the couch next to Winston. One showing of My Fair Lady later and the two of them were passed out cuddled up together.
The next morning Elena was sure that the sun was just a little bit more sunny than it was yesterday and her bed was just a little softer, and Winston was just a little more cuddly. Life just seemed a whole lot better and also a whole lot bigger. Tuesday morning there wasn’t one damn thing that she had to do right this minute. She soaked it up, rolling around in her fluffy covers, tickling Winston’s belly, smiling and enjoying life.
“No nightmares again!” Elena smiled as she blew raspberries on Winston. She actually had a million things to do but she wasn’t concerned in the least, today she was going to do thing at her own pace. The first thing she did was make tea, grab a muffin and her Lovecraft horror anthology and have a nice hot bubble bath for an hour. After getting out, she felt deliciously lazy and spent a good chunk of the morning in the park with Winston and his favorite squeaky cow. Charlotte called at noon to go for lunch to celebrate Ellie’s big “life changin‘ change.” The two met at Vino and chatted about all the arrangements and changes that Ellie had ahead of her. Three hours, many tears and a few glasses of wine later the two went back to Ellie’s apartment where they painted nails and watched movies for the rest of the night.
Within a month Ellie was handing the keys to her landlord and a cab was waiting at the sidewalk. Charlotte, along with her family and friends, had helped Ellie pack up her entire life, fill out the necessary paperwork and tie up all the loose ends her had here. It was definitely a plus to have a best friend who had friends in high places, she would really miss Charlotte. When Ellie arrived at the airport, Charlotte was there dressed in bubble gum pink, crying and waiting. Ellie had sent most of her stuff that she had decided to keep ahead of time and all she had was a small suitcase and Winston with her. This was going to be the hardest part. Charlotte and Ellie stood in a tight embrace for quite some time but it never seemed long enough.
“I’ll miss ya darlin’, I can’t imagine what I’m gonna do without ya, I can’t believe you’re leavin’!” Charlotte blubbered as she threw her little arms around Ellie.
“I promise that as SOON as I’m set up, I will let you know and you can come!”
Charlotte brightened a bit and gave her friend one last squeeze before watching her head through security.
Thirty minutes later Ellie was settled into 14A with Winston tucked safely under the seat in front of her. Only a 20-hour plane ride and she would have a new house, a new job and a new life.
