here are so many reasons that I am against the Olympics. Maybe the fact that it cost Vancouver $6 billion just to have the Olympics when we’re already billions in debt. Maybe it was the fact that the athlete’s hardly see any of the money because it all goes to huge corporations instead of back into the community. Maybe its because of the road closures downtown for a month that small business’ went out of business. Maybe it’s because of the fact that the Olympic events are completely inaccessible to any average family because; a. the tickets are too expensive for an average family of 4 to afford or b. the tickets were all bought up my corporate sponsors who distributed them among their own employees. Or maybe it’s because the Olympics in general, no matter what the country, all cause way to much grief then they are worth. How about the Olympics in Beijing where children were forcibly taken from their homes and parents and forced to train for sports and went years without ever seeing a family member? What about the people’s houses that were razed to the ground because they were along the torch’s path and they were not ‘pretty’ enough for national broadcast. There are also many, many, many more reasons. Is athletic ability worth making people homeless? Worth causing billions of debt? Worth bankrupting small business? Worth seizing children from their homes? Worth arresting the homeless? Worth garnishing wages? In my opinion, athletic ability comes in last behind all those major social issues that we now all have on our hands thanks to the Olympics. That’s why I am against them.
